Tokenization

Tokenization is the process of representing ownership of an asset, such as a fund share, bond or ounce of gold, as a token on a blockchain.

Tokenization creates a digital token that stands for a claim on an asset. The asset itself is usually held by a custodian, and a legal structure (a fund, trust or special-purpose company) links the token to it. Once tokenized, ownership can be transferred onchain, split into small units and used by smart contracts.
