How to Invest in BlackRock BUIDL (and Who Can)

BUIDL is BlackRock’s USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund, the largest tokenized treasury fund. It holds cash, US Treasury bills and repurchase agreements, targets a stable $1 per token, and pays income monthly as new tokens. Getting in is less about crypto and more about who you are.

Who can invest

BUIDL is a private fund, not a public one. It is open to:

  • Qualified purchasers: under US securities law, roughly individuals with at least $5 million in investments, or institutions with at least $25 million.
  • Investors who pass KYC/AML checks with Securitize, the fund’s tokenization platform and transfer agent.

It launched with a reported minimum investment of $5 million. That puts it out of reach for almost all individuals; most holders are crypto firms, funds, DAOs and other tokenized products.

How subscriptions work

  1. Onboard with Securitize: identity checks, investor qualification and wallet approval.
  2. Subscribe in US dollars or supported stablecoins.
  3. Receive BUIDL tokens in an approved wallet on a supported chain.
  4. Earn income, paid monthly as new BUIDL tokens.
  5. Redeem through Securitize. A USDC liquidity facility has also been available for converting BUIDL to USDC quickly.

Transfers are restricted: tokens can only move between wallets that are on the fund’s allowlist.

How retail investors get exposure

You can’t buy BUIDL directly as an individual, but some products that are open to more investors hold it:

  • Ondo OUSG holds BUIDL among its treasury assets. It is open to qualified and accredited investors.
  • Ondo USDY is a separate treasury-backed note open to individuals outside the US.
  • Franklin Templeton BENJI is a US-registered money market fund available to US retail investors.

Compare them in BUIDL vs USDY and BUIDL vs OUSG.

Before you invest

BUIDL’s assets are about as safe as dollar assets get, but the token adds transfer restrictions, reliance on Securitize’s records, and smart contract risk on each chain. Read the fund’s offering documents and check the current terms with Securitize. Nothing here is investment advice.
